Challenge

The Louisville Northeast Regional Library, the third in a series of new regional libraries, needed to be more cost-effective and energy-efficient than its predecessors while maintaining ample natural daylight. The site, located on a historic 13-acre lawn, required a design that preserved its heritage while integrating seamlessly into the urban environment.

Solution

To achieve a bright, inviting space without excessive energy costs, the project team installed 53 Solatube SkyVault M74DS tubular daylighting devices (TDDs). These replaced the traditional clerestories used in the previous libraries, significantly reducing the need for artificial lighting. The design combined TDDs with acrylic panels to create a striking skylight effect, enhancing aesthetics and sustainability.

Advanced lighting design software was used to optimize natural light penetration while Solatube Daylight Dimmers allowed flexibility in spaces requiring darkness for presentations. Despite large overhangs blocking direct sunlight, the Solatube system ensured a well-lit and welcoming atmosphere throughout the library.

Results

  • Reduced energy consumption: Electrical usage dropped from 1.02 watts/sq. ft. to 0.65 watts/sq. ft., lowering utility costs.
  • Cost savings: Eliminating large clerestories simplified roof framing, saving $249,765 in structural steel expenses.
  • Sustainability & wellness: The design enhances daylight exposure, promoting occupant well-being while reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
  • Community impact: The library now serves as a vibrant learning hub for over 170,000 residents, blending modern functionality with historical preservation.
