Solatube Skylights Bring Natural Light to a Landmark

Challenge

The V&A Museum in Dundee, Scotland, features a bold architectural design, but its main lobby—a double-height space with angular walls and small, slot-like windows—lacked natural light. The challenge was to introduce daylight without disrupting the aesthetic, while also creating a "floating" lighting effect.

Solution

Solatube Scotland collaborated with ARUP lighting designers to install 60 Solatube 330 DS-O Daylighting Systems. These innovative skylights bring natural light into the lobby, allowing visitors to experience changing daylight conditions. To achieve the desired “floating” look, reflective extension tubes were laminated in grey to blend seamlessly with the roof structure, making the daylight appear to emerge from suspended diffusers. Solatube Daylight Dimmers were also added to integrate with artificial lighting and adjust brightness for exhibitions.

Results

“The Solatube systems provide quality daylighting in one of the museum’s key spaces,” said Laura Phillips, Associate Director at ARUP. Visitors can now enjoy a bright, welcoming atmosphere while shopping, dining, and exploring this world-class design museum.
